Iron is a very common foulant found on membranes. However, its often combined with other materials including silts and biofouling. In this video we are dealing with a membrane that has a heavy biological film combined with iron fouling. This can occur when colloidal iron combine with Iron Related Bacteria (IRB) on the membrane surface.

This video shows the combined action of two of our AWC cleaners to recover a heavily fouled membrane.

The AWC C-227 caustic cleaner which is our most powerful caustic cleaner breaks down the biofouling formed around the iron particles and disperses any clays present. This then opens the structure up so the C-217 iron cleaning reagent can come in and dissolve and remove the iron from the membrane surface.

In this video you can also see the C-227 forming microbubbles that help breakup and the biofouling but it’s the AWC C-217 that does the heavy work of removing the rust.
