Hydrophis green minerals pilot plant starts up

Membrane Works are proud to at last turn on the “desal brine to green minerals” pilot plant that we have been developing for Hydrophis over the last two years. This is a carbon capture and utilization system (CCU) that takes exhaust CO2 gas and through a range of different chemical reactions converts it into green minerals and at the same time reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide and ocean acidification. This patented technology be able to be incorporated onto existing desalination plants to reduce environmental footprint and generate saleable products.

Bringing Technology To Life!

We have been working in partnership with Hydrophis over the two years to bring this from conception to realization. In 2021, Hydrophis came to us with a concept to help reduce ocean acidification, since then we have worked with them conducting technology reviews, market assessments, laboratory research as well as design, construction and building the pilot plant and now finally supporting the operations team in running it for a three-month trial on a large desalination plant in Australia.

Pilot overview

The resulting pilot is a 30m3 per day plant that includes:

  • Chemical dosing and pH adjustment
  • Precipitation processes
  • CO2 Gas contacting and dissolution
  • NF membrane treatment
  • Flocculated settling in a manufactured thickener
  • Solids filtration
  • Wastewater management
  • PLC control and data management
  • Research and Operational planning and delivery

This is an exciting period for both Hydrophis and Membrane Works and we are excited to see this finally running.
