Ion Exchange Testing Systems: From Benchtop to Field
We have a just expanded our range of ion exchange (IX) testing systems with a Field Pilot System so that we can cater to every stage of process development; from small-scale screening to full-scale pilot testing.
We thought this was a good opportunity to go over some of our ion exchange testing systems and approaches.
Small-Scale Testing: 10mm Benchtop Columns
For resin screening and research and development (R&D) we favour the use of our 10mm benchtop columns as they allow us to test ion exchange with relatively small volumes of test solution. These compact systems are ideal for scenarios where water availability is limited, requiring only 2-4 litres per run we can complete a development project with as little as 20 litres of feed solution.
Key Benefits:
- Minimal Water Consumption: Suited for labs and R&D where resources are constrained.
- Rapid Turnaround: Quickly evaluate multiple resin options and formulations.
- R&D Optimization: Ideal for screening, process validation and early-stage development.
This is helpful to gain insights into resin performance, enabling businesses to refine processes decisions before scaling up.

Pilot-Scale Testing: 25mm Columns
When the time comes to validate resin performance under realistic conditions, our 25mm columns are the perfect choice. With a full bed height of 800-1500mm, these columns mimic full-scale systems, delivering reliable, scalable data. Each run requires 150-200 litres of water, striking a balance between practicality and precision.
Key Benefits:
- Accurate Simulation: Closely replicates operational environments for credible results.
- Off-site Testing: Conducted at our dedicated testing facility for controlled, repeatable experiments.
- Design Validation: Enables comparison of resin performance under varying conditions.
These columns provide a bridge between R&D and large-scale piloting, helping to fine-tune system designs before deployment. These can also be rented for use on site and tied into a side stream if required.

Field Piloting: 150mm Columns
For large-scale, on-site piloting, our new 150mm columns have a customisable design that allows us to demonstrate performance across a range of applications. Designed for longer term trials, these systems use 20-30 m³ of water per run and accommodate three columns, which can operate either in series (for example at a power station demineralization for anion, cation, and mixed-bed setups) or in parallel to compare different resins (such as screening different PFAS removal media).
Key Features:
- Customisable Configurations: Tailored for lead-lag setups or parallel resin evaluation.
- Real-World Validation: On site operation means that resins are exposed to day-to-day variations to capture real world operational conditions.
- Flexible Flow Rates: Operates at 1.7 LPM (6 BV/h) to 15 LPM (50 BV/h), meeting diverse process requirements.
With backwash and regeneration capabilities, these systems allow for efficient operation and extended use during field tests.
